El Caire, una de les ciutats més grans tant d'Àfrica com de l'Orient Mitjà, és la capital d'Egipte. El Caire ha estat un centre de gran importància per a moltes civilitzacions, cultures i religions. Des de faraònics i grecoromans fins a otomans i europeus, passant per jueus, cristians i islàmics, cadascuna de les seves identitats ha deixat una forta empremta al Caire, convertint-la així en una de les ciutats més fascinants del món. L'altiplà de Gizeh, que inclou les piràmides de Gizeh i l'esfinx, és l'únic monument que queda de les Set Meravelles del Món Antic i l'atracció turística més famosa del país. La gran massa de les piràmides és impressionant. El Caire islàmic, el centre del Caire històric, es fa millor a peu. Situat a l'est del centre de la ciutat, està ple d'encantadores mesquites i fonts d'aigua. Els llocs més importants per visitar són la Ciutadella, la Mesquita Mohamed Ali, Khan el Khalili, el basar principal, algunes mesquites històriques i mostres d'arquitectura medieval, així com alguns dels banys turcs o Hammams del Caire. Poques ciutats del món superen el Caire en nombre de monuments o estils arquitectònics. El Caire no és una ciutat normal, el Caire és tot un món.
